Five Educational History Comic Books:
A compelling history comic book can vividly and excitingly
depict a significant historical event. This show, which follows siblings
displaced by the fire, is set against the backdrop of the Great Chicago Fire,
for instance. Japanese people were detained for years under armed guard in
another history comic. They were sent to internment camps. Behind barbed wire
fences, a young boy describes his family's experiences. Read this comic book
about history to learn more about the happenings.
The adventures of Scooter McGinty:
A time-travelling character in Scooter McGinty's Adventures
in History explains historical events through the eyes of a comic book. There
are 12 reproducible comic books and activities for each subject in the series.
The answers to each question and discussion topics from Scooter's Quick Quiz
are included at the end of each comic book for additional educational value.
These books are a great way for teachers to get students interested in history.
By Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis:
Marjane Satrapi, an Iranian-born author, wrote the graphic
novel Persepolis, which tells the story of her early adulthood and childhood in
Iran during the Islamic Revolution. The French-language comic has sold more
than two million copies worldwide. The book has also been turned into a movie,
which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and won the
Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.
Iran in 1980, during the Islamic Revolution, is the setting
for the graphic novel. The book goes into great detail about how war and
religious extremism affected Iranian society. At the same time, Marji, the main
character, is a girl of upper middle class who learns about Western political
thought and education. Consequently, she considers both her desire to learn
more about her family's history and her privilege as a member of a privileged
class.
Art Spiegelman's Maus:
Art Spiegelman presents the Holocaust through the
perspectives of both children and adults in his graphic novel Maus. Spiegelman
uses the metaphor of animals, like cats and mice, to convey his point in the
stories. A Jewish boy's experiences growing up in Nazi camps and his difficult
relationship with his father are also depicted in the book. Although there are
few illustrations, they contribute to the sense of dread.
One of Art Spiegelman's excellent history comics is The
Complete Maus. This graphic memoir depicts the life of a young boy in two
different eras and his father's experiences during two of history's most
horrific events. The animals, all of the characters, struggle to survive the
terror and war. Families can read the comic and talk about how Spiegelman tells
this horrifying story through comics.
Frederic Wertham's Seduction of the Innocent:
Seduction of the Innocent, despite its name, is very
different from the Chick-tract screeds. In the book, Wertham laments the
decline of high bourgeois culture. However, in contrast to Jesse Helms and
Theodor Adorno, the author was raised in a predominantly humanistic
environment. The Hidden Persuaders and Theodor Adorno's perspectives on culture
and imagination are closer to Wertham's than Jesse Helms' or Adorno's.
The book makes the case for comic books, which are fun for
kids but can also lead to criminal behavior. The outcomes of Dr. Wertham's
findings have been numerous. He claimed that children learn to behave in a
similar manner by reading comic books with adult characters who behave in a
similar manner. As a result, comic books written for children pose a threat to
society. He argues that comic books are no longer innocent in Seduction of the
Innocent.
